"Fraternamente," a podcast to accompany priests toward the meeting with Leo XIV

Fabio Colagrande – Vatican City

Forty days, forty keywords, each one an opportunity to reflect on one's own vocation and rediscover the meaning of the priestly ministry. Titled "Fraternamente. Una fedeltà che genera futuro" ("Fraternally. A Faithfulness That Generates the Future"), the new podcast from Vatican Radio – Vatican News, available from 1 November 2026, will accompany Italian priests toward their meeting with Pope Leo XIV on 12 December. Conceived and hosted by Fr. Alberto Mariani, with music by Marco MKE Evangelista, the project offers brief daily meditations built around Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Pontiff. It is a spiritual journey that invites priests to rediscover, even in the fatigues of pastoral service, the deep reasons for their calling and the value of communion among brother priests.

A project born from an invitation of the Pope

The idea arose over the summer, when Fr. Alberto learned of the invitation Leo XIV addressed to Italian priests. A presbyter of the Diocese of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo, with 52 years of priesthood behind him and for a long time a parish priest, Fr. Mariani is the founder of the Oasi Mariana Betania, a Catholic community established in the second half of the 1980s in Alvito, in the province of Frosinone. It is a center of welcome and spiritual accompaniment that combines prayer, listening to the Word of God, and service to others. The community also involves lay people and families, offering formation paths, spirituality meetings, and prayer initiatives, inspired by Mary's words at the wedding at Cana: "Do whatever he tells you." It was precisely for a small group of priests linked to the Oasi that Fr. Mariani had initially thought of a series of written reflections to be shared daily.

"It was born the very day I learned of the Pope's invitation," he recounts. The project originally envisioned as many as one hundred meditations, prepared by devoting part of the summer holidays to writing. Then came the idea of widening the experience, turning the texts into a podcast accessible to everyone. A step the priest himself attributes to Providence: from an initiative meant for a few friends, to a proposal addressed to all who wish to devote a few minutes of their day to reflection and prayer.

The aim is not to offer a training course, but to foster greater attention to the Magisterium and strengthen the sense of belonging to the presbyterate. Fr. Mariani speaks of "a simple seed, a small seed, nothing more," entrusted to Providence so that it may bear fruit. His hope is that priests may come to "feel more like brothers," even without knowing one another personally.

Forty steps in the footsteps of the Good Shepherd

Each episode, lasting a few minutes, follows an essential structure: a keyword, a biblical passage, a quotation from Leo XIV's Apostolic Letter "Una fedeltà che genera futuro," a brief meditation, a personal question, and a concluding prayer.

The journey begins with Jesus' gaze upon the rich young man, as recounted by the Evangelist Mark: "Jesus, looking at him, loved him." From here arises the first reflection, devoted to remembering that every vocation originates in an encounter of love, before any responsibilities and pastoral activities. Meditations follow on personal calling, on remembering one's first love, and on the capacity to begin again, like Peter on the shores of the Lake of Galilee.

The podcast then addresses concrete questions of priestly life. In the episode "Prima del fare, l'essere" ("Before doing, being"), for example, Fr. Mariani warns against the risk of measuring one's ministry exclusively by the activities carried out. In "Nessuno cammina da solo" ("No one walks alone"), he instead invites priests to share their difficulties, ask for help, and pay attention to brother priests who are most isolated. Other episodes explore the relationship with the bishop, ongoing formation, prayer, the Eucharist, listening, and the recognition of the diverse charisms.

Fraternity is the guiding thread of the entire journey. It is not a generic sentiment, but a mutual responsibility, to be expressed in concrete gestures of closeness and collaboration. The meditations progressively accompany priests from rediscovering their own identity to communion with their brothers, and finally to service of the People of God.

A faithfulness that looks to the future

The project is inspired by the Apostolic Letter "Una fedeltà che genera futuro," signed by Leo XIV on 8 December 2025 and published on 22 December, on the sixtieth anniversary of the conciliar decrees Optatam totius, on priestly formation, and Presbyterorum Ordinis, on the ministry and life of priests.

In the document, the Pope offers a reflection on the priesthood through five perspectives: service, fraternity, synodality, mission, and the future. He invites us to view faithfulness not as the mere preservation of the past, but as readiness for daily conversion. He recalls the importance of ongoing formation, of caring for elderly and lonely priests, of collaboration with the laity, and of a pastoral style free from efficientism and self-referentiality. "No shepherd exists alone!", the Pontiff reminds us.

These are themes that will also accompany the days of 11 and 12 December, promoted by the Italian Episcopal Conference with the Dicastery for the Clergy. The programme includes a vigil of prayer on Friday 11 in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, presided over by Archbishop Giuseppe Baturi, Secretary General of the CEI. On Saturday 12, in the Basilica of Saint Peter, after Lauds led by Cardinal Lazzaro You Heung-sik, at 9:30 there will be an audience with Leo XIV, followed at 11 by Mass presided over by Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, President of the CEI.

Cardinal Zuppi, in inviting priests, recalled the difficulties that accompany ministry, from loneliness to discouragement, stressing the need to rediscover together the joy of the calling.

It is in this perspective that "Fraternamente" fits: a daily listening appointment, designed to prepare spiritually for the meeting with the Pope, but also to continue reflecting on one's vocation beyond that date.

The 40 episodes will be published starting November 1, every morning at 7 a.m., on the Vatican News website, on Spotify, and on the main audio streaming platforms.
