Faced with the meteoric rise of artificial intelligence, the Vatican is calling for ethical principles to be turned into concrete safeguards. Addressing international experts gathered by the Pontifical Academy for Life on October 30, Pope Leo XIV outlined five cardinal priorities, strongly advocating global regulation and the rejection of autonomous weapons.
Acknowledging that it is legitimate to feel a certain "sense of unease" in the face of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, Pope Leo XIV proposed five avenues for reflection on October 30, 2026. Receiving experts at the Vatican at the initiative of the Pontifical Academy for Life, he particularly stressed the urgency of establishing an international regulatory system.
"We recognize the direction we should take, but we are not yet doing enough to move forward," observed Leo XIV in his address delivered in English. Speaking to participants from many countries, including several American universities such as Berkeley and MIT, the author of the encyclical Magnifica humanitas began by paying tribute to his predecessor, recalling that he had invested himself deeply in the subject.
